sms.1mail.lt vs SMS-Activate — A Real Comparison

We built sms.1mail.lt after being customers of SMS-Activate for years. Here's the honest breakdown — including where SMS-Activate is still better.

TL;DR: SMS-Activate has more countries and a proper API; we have simpler payments (normal EU cards, no crypto), lower prices, and instant EU support. If you're buying 1-20 numbers and hate crypto flows, we're less painful. If you need 100+ numbers per week with API automation or exotic countries, SMS-Activate is still the incumbent.

Where SMS-Activate wins

Country coverage

This isn't close. SMS-Activate stocks 180+ countries, including places that are hard to serve legally under EU rules. If you need a number from Vietnam, Bangladesh, Peru, or Kazakhstan, they have it and we don't. Full stop. Our roadmap doesn't include CIS or Asia because our payment rails (Stripe EU) aren't designed for those markets.

API automation

Buying 500 numbers a week for a research operation, a QA farm, or a growth funnel? You need a REST API to script the purchases and code polling. SMS-Activate has that. We don't yet — it's on the roadmap for Q4 2026 but not shipped. If you need programmatic buying today, use them.

Been around longer

SMS-Activate launched in 2016. There are 10 years of Reddit threads, Stack Overflow answers, and YouTube tutorials on how to use their API. We're 9 days old at time of writing. If you value the safety of a tool other people have already stress-tested, they're the safer pick.

Where we win

Normal EU payments — no crypto

SMS-Activate's payment story is: send USDT or BTC to a wallet address, wait for confirmations, refresh your balance. If you don't already own crypto and have a working exchange account, this is a 15-minute detour. We take Apple Pay, Google Pay, Revolut, iDEAL, Bancontact, and any Mastercard/Visa. You're through checkout in under a minute.

Guest checkout for one-offs

Just need one number, right now? Pay €0.40 with your card, get the code, close the tab. No account, no password, no email confirmation, no balance to top up. This is our biggest UX advantage over every competitor — nobody else in the space lets you buy without registering.

Real refunds to real bank accounts

If SMS-Activate refunds you, the money goes back to your SMS-Activate balance — spendable only on more of their service. If we refund a guest checkout, the money goes back to your card, in your bank account, spendable on rent. Wallet-mode refunds are still to wallet (that's the wallet-mode trade-off) but they're instant.

Prices — for common services on EU country stock

For Telegram, WhatsApp, Google, Instagram, TikTok, Discord — the top 6 use cases that cover ~80% of demand — our wallet-mode prices are consistently lower than SMS-Activate's card-equivalent prices for the same country. Their crypto prices can dip lower on RUB conversion, but if you factor in the crypto-transfer time and fees, EU-card-to-wallet comes out cheaper for typical purchases.

FAQ

Can I use both services?

Absolutely, and we recommend it if you're doing anything at scale. Different providers have different country pools that get "burned" (used up on a target service) at different rates. Multi-sourcing means when WhatsApp starts rejecting one provider's UK pool, you can switch to the other in 30 seconds instead of waiting hours for stock to refresh.

Is one more legal than the other?

Both are legal in most jurisdictions. Buying a virtual number to receive one SMS isn't restricted anywhere we operate. The difference is jurisdiction: we're under Lithuanian / EU law (GDPR applies, Lithuanian company registration ARENAMEDIA SP. Z O.O., VAT invoices available). SMS-Activate is under Russian law, which for EU business customers can be a compliance issue for accounting or procurement.

Which is safer / less scammy?

Both are legitimate businesses that deliver. Neither is a scam. Chargeback risk: because we use Stripe, a fraudulent purchase can be disputed through your bank — normal consumer protection applies. SMS-Activate uses crypto, so there's no chargeback path if something goes wrong. That's not "less safe" per se; it's a different risk profile.

Do you have referral / affiliate programs?

Yes on our side — earn €0.10 per friend who deposits, applied to your wallet automatically. Your referral link is in your account dashboard after signup. SMS-Activate has an affiliate program too; it's ~5% of referred users' spend, paid in USDT.

What if I try you and it doesn't work?

Full refund on the failed number. If our stock in a country is truly out and we can't deliver, you get all your money back — Stripe refund on guest checkout, instant wallet credit if you deposited. There's no vendor lock: you can leave with your money.
