How to Create a Telegram Account Without Using Your Real Phone Number

The signup flow itself is easy — the part most guides skip is what to do in the first 5 minutes so you don't lose the account when the virtual number goes back into the pool. Here's both.

Why do this at all

Telegram is one of the few big messengers where the phone number is visible to strangers you add to groups, at least by default. Every large channel you join sees your number (unless you change privacy settings first). Every scammer bot in every crypto group is scraping numbers. Once your real number is on Telegram and you've joined a few groups, it's in a dozen databases within a week.

The other reason is more practical: a second Telegram identity. Public account for online friends and communities, private account for family and close contacts. Same phone, two separate profiles.

Both goals are solved the same way — sign up with a virtual number instead of your real SIM. Telegram is one of the most virtual-number-friendly services, with ~92% first-try success on our stock. Here's the step-by-step.

Step 1: Pick country + buy a virtual number

Not every country works equally well for Telegram, but delivery is fine on most of our stock. My defaults:

• UK, Netherlands, Lithuania, Ireland — highest delivery rates, cleanest ranges, rare rejections.
• US, India — cheaper but hit range-block rejections more often. Fine if you want US-based Telegram (some communities check).
• Russia, Vietnam, Nigeria — avoid unless you specifically need that country code. Higher rejection and voice-fallback issues.

Go to sms.1mail.lt/service/telegram/, pick a country from the recommended list, click buy. Cost is ~€0.20. You'll get a number in E.164 format (starts with +) and a live inbox waiting for the code.

Step 2: Enter the number in Telegram signup

On the phone, tablet, or desktop where you want the second account:

1. Install Telegram (or open it if already installed and tap "Add Account" from the sidebar menu).
2. Choose "Start Messaging" → country prompt → find the country matching your virtual number.
3. Enter the virtual number without the leading + or country code (Telegram fills the country code from the country picker).
4. Tap Next. Telegram will confirm: "Is this the correct number?" Double-check before hitting Yes — a typo here means the SMS goes to someone else's number.
5. Telegram sends the SMS. It'll appear on your sms.1mail.lt order page within 30–60 seconds. Copy the 5-digit code into Telegram.
6. Telegram asks for a name. Enter whatever you want the account to be called.

You're in. But you're not done — the next step is the important one.

Step 3: Enable Cloud Password IMMEDIATELY

This is the step most people skip and it's the one that decides whether you keep the account. Here's why:

Every virtual number goes back into the provider's pool after a while. Eventually, someone else buys the same number. If that person tries to sign up for Telegram, Telegram sends them an SMS code. Without a Cloud Password on your account, that code alone lets them log in and take everything over — your chats, your groups, your channels.

Telegram's Cloud Password is a second layer on top of the SMS code. When enabled, anyone re-registering the number also needs the password. Without it, they see "This account has Two-Step Verification enabled" and get locked out.

Steps:

1. Open Telegram → tap the hamburger menu (top-left) → Settings.
2. Tap Privacy and Security.
3. Tap Two-Step Verification (Telegram calls it "Cloud Password" in some regions).
4. Set a strong password. Not a PIN — a real password with letters. Write it in your password manager.
5. Set a recovery email. This is important because if you forget the password, this email is the only way back in.
6. Confirm the recovery email by clicking the link Telegram sends.

Done. The account is now bound to a password you know, not just a phone number you don't own long-term.

Step 4: (Optional) Consider a proxy

Telegram signup shows the operator your IP address. If you're worried about tying the new account to your home IP, use a Telegram proxy (Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy Settings). Public MTProto proxy lists exist; Telegram supports them natively.

Fair warning: proxy servers can technically log your traffic, and the free public ones almost certainly do. If proxy privacy actually matters for your use case, run your own MTProto server on a cheap VPS. For most people who just want a second identity, this step is optional.

What can go wrong

The SMS never arrives

Wait a full 90 seconds. If nothing, hit "Resend code" in Telegram once. If still nothing, the number range may be blocked — cancel the order for a refund, try a different country. See Why virtual numbers get rejected for the seven reasons this happens.

"This number is already registered"

Someone previously used this virtual number for Telegram. Cancel and get a different number — you'll be refunded automatically.

Telegram asks for a "Code from your active session"

This happens when the number was previously registered and there's still an active session somewhere in the pool. Nothing you can do — cancel, try another.

Cloud Password recovery email never arrives

Check spam. If still nothing, delete the Cloud Password setup (Settings → Privacy → Two-Step Verification → Turn Off) and try again with a different email. Some free providers block Telegram's notification server.

FAQ

Will people I message see the virtual number?

By default, no — Telegram lets you set number visibility to "Nobody" in Privacy Settings. Do this immediately after signup (Settings → Privacy → Phone Number → Who can see → Nobody). Contacts see your name; strangers see nothing.

Can I use this account long-term?

Yes, with the Cloud Password. Telegram doesn't require you to re-verify the SMS after signup — as long as you stay logged in (or can log in with the password + email recovery), the account is yours. Many people run Telegram accounts on virtual numbers for years.

What if I get logged out later?

To log back in, Telegram will send an SMS to the virtual number — which you no longer own. That's where the Cloud Password saves you: Telegram lets you log in with the password instead of the SMS if 2FA is enabled. And if you forget the password, the recovery email brings it back.

Can I move this account to a real number later?

Yes. Settings → Edit Profile → Phone Number → Change Number. Telegram will send codes to both the old and the new number to complete the swap. Once you own both, you can migrate the account to your real SIM if you decide you want to.
