Avoid for Google specifically: the US pool. Google runs its tightest range check on North American mobile prefixes, and virtual-number US pools are rejected far more often than EU ones. If you need a US-looking Gmail identity, a physical US prepaid SIM is unfortunately the only reliable path.
Common issues and how to fix them
Google says "we can't call this number" or offers a voice call only
You waited past Google's SMS attempt and it fell back to voice. Virtual numbers can't receive voice calls — that's the fundamental constraint. Click the small "text me instead" link and retry immediately. If Google no longer offers the SMS option, you have to wait 30 minutes for the throttle to reset, then start over with a fresh Google account tab (Incognito helps).
"This phone number cannot be used for verification" / "try later"
Google's range check flagged the number. Cancel the order for a full refund and pick a different country — UK, DE, and IE cycle their pools most aggressively so retries land fresh numbers. If you see "try later" specifically, that's a real 30-minute block on your Google session — clear cookies or open a new Incognito window before retrying, otherwise Google will keep rejecting anything you feed it.
Code arrives late, past Google's timer
Google's SMS timer is short (2 minutes on the first attempt) and it doesn't accept codes after expiry, even if they show up on our end 30 seconds later. If the code is late but present in your session, use Google's "resend code" button — the fresh code will arrive on the same virtual number and you can enter it in time.
Alternatives we're honest about
For one Gmail that you'll keep long-term, a physical prepaid SIM at a phone shop (€5-10) is cheaper and lasts forever. If you can walk into a shop, that beats us on total cost. Free tempsms sites regularly get rejected by Google — its fraud model has memorised the shared-inbox numbers. Google Voice numbers are also increasingly rejected for new Google-account verification (yes, ironically, Google doesn't fully accept its own VoIP numbers as verification numbers).

Is using a virtual number for a Gmail account against Google's terms?
Google's Terms of Service require accurate identity information but do not specifically prohibit third-party phone numbers. You're paying for a real cellular number briefly assigned to you. What you do with the resulting Google account is your responsibility — normal use (personal Gmail, YouTube, Ads) is fine; mass-account creation for spam or scraping is not.
Will Google ban my new Gmail because of the virtual number?
Not because of the number itself. Google bans accounts for policy violations (spam, fraud, ToS breaches). A single new Gmail behaving normally has the same standing as one verified with a SIM. Where it goes wrong: creating many accounts in quick succession from the same IP or fingerprint — Google's clustering model will link them and disable them together.
Can I use the same number to recover the account later?
No. Our numbers are single-use by design. The instant you receive the code, the number returns to the pool. As soon as your account is created, add a backup email address in Google's security settings — this becomes your recovery path and doesn't need SMS. Skip this step at your own risk.
